Finding Some Middle Ground

Posted in Mikey Kay with tags , , , , , , , , , , on March 6, 2011 by mikeykay

So as you all know, I started going to school full time at the end of October 2010. School has been crazier than I ever thought it would be. It’s been 40 hours a week of nothing, but doing hair and book work. This hasn’t left much time for my photography, both personal and paid work, and I miss photography very, very much. It’s been really hard for me to view the normal sites I visit and read my normal blogs. Continue reading

Missing The Road

Posted in Mikey Kay with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on February 9, 2011 by mikeykay

Last April I hit the road with the boys in Danger Is My Middle on the Love, Friendship and Money tour. I had done a few trips with them in the past, so I knew that the tour was going to be nothing, but crazy and filled with tons of fun. We hit the road with Skies Alive and Atavan. We all became one big family in a matter of days. But once I got home, I knew that I wouldn’t be hitting the road again for awhile, due to the fact that I was going back to school. Sure I did a few small trips before my school started in October, but none of them were touring or anything like that.

When I was signing up for school I never would have guessed that a 10 month program keeping me in one state would be so hard for me, and that it would make me miss the road so much. I know that it’s not really a long time and I do have a few short trips while I’m in school, but it’s not the same as being able to tour. Lately I have really been missing living in a van and getting to take photos documenting the lives of others. Since none of my friends lives have changed and they are all still on the road, reading their tweets and Facebook updates just makes me miss it that much more. I found myself looking through the shots that I took while on my last tour, so thus I feel that the best way to share my feelings was through this blog by sharing a few photos and some stories to go along with them.

Getting to beat up The Alumni Club.

Posted in Mikey Kay with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 23, 2011 by mikeykay

As some of you may know I have been working with the band The Alumni Club for the past year or so. They are one of my favorite bands to work with since they always come up with great ideas for their shoots and almost never come to me saying that they don’t have an idea, but need a photoshoot. Well, this time The Club really out did themselves. I got a text from Greg saying that he wanted to do a photoshoot where they were beat up and got mug shots taken of them. We talked about this idea for a few months, discussing how we were going to shoot it and how the final images were going to turn out.

I didn’t grow up dreaming to be a photographer

Posted in Mikey Kay with tags , , , , , , , , on January 12, 2011 by mikeykay

“I didn’t grow up dreaming to be a photographer. I didn’t assist for anybody. I just started doing it… The way I do it is just the way I do it.” -Scott Schumann AKA The Sartorialist

I’m starting my blog out with this quote because it really hits home for me. When I was younger I never once said I want to be a photographer. As I got older and into my later teens, I got into the local music scene, which took me in and out of a number of different local bands. At one time I thought to myself, “this is what I wanna do with my life.” But as I grew as an artist and started finding my own way, I notice that I was paying more attention to the photography aspect of music. I would focus on what made the photo better than others or why my eye was being pulled to that photo while flipping through whatever magazine I was reading. I had always wanted to to take photography in high school, but since I went to a private high school that didn’t rent out cameras and I didn’t own a SLR camera, I wasn’t able to take the class.
